Inspiring Videos and Podcasts for Creative Educators

Hi Reader,
Since the Top Chef finale is over and the new Smurfs movie remains a month away, we figured that you might crave some multimedia stimulation.

Before we get to our recommendations, we’d like to remind you that there are still some places left in our June 30th Learning Adventures workshop (Los Angeles). Gary Stager just returned from leading three days of PD in Santa Cruz County, CA and is hard at work preparing for the new workshop scheduled for June 30th.

Learning Adventures is a new approach to curriculum planning and teaching that answers the question, “What if project-based learning were the main course of what I teach, rather than a side dish or dessert? This approach helps creative, modern educators shape the learning environment for deep, imaginative, and interdisciplinary knowledge construction by learners of all ages.

"What’s the Big Idea?" — Podcast with Gary Stager

California educator Dan Kearney recently hosted Gary Stager on his podcast in a segment called "Constructing Learning with Dr. Gary Stager." The conversation was candid, thoughtful, and revealing. During this freewheeling episode, Gary shares his thoughts on the art of teaching, the state of education, constructivism, and his friend Seymour Papert. We think you will enjoy this one.

The Learner's Apprentice: AI and the Amplification of Human Creativity - Selling Like Hotcakes!

While we could ask ChatGPT about the origins of the the term "selling like hotcakes" we could in the same amount of time make an interactive pancake adventure, an Augmented Reality pancake flipping game, or other creative hotcake-related pursuits—all without learning to code. Find out how your students can partner with chatbots in creative, fun, and school-appropriate ways in Ken Kahn's new book, The Learner's Apprentice: AI and the Application of Human Creativity.

Listen as Ken explains these concepts in this new ShiftED Podcast with Chris Colley: "In Conversation with Ken Kahn: Infusing Creativity & Curiosity into Al Chatbots."

If your school is in the exploratory stage of AI use (and who isn't these days), consider buying a set of these books for your working group. Be sure to include some students on your R&D team—students can be allies and advocates for our educational technology wishes, but only if they are included in the process. Turn your AV club into an AI/V club and you may (will) be surprised by what they come up with! As an added bonus, these students can be part of the implementation team next year, helping teachers and modeling appropriate student use.

Everything you could ever possibly want to know about AI

Our friend, the remarkable scientist, mathematician, and inventor Dr. Stephen Wolfram, recently appeared on a podcast in which he takes viewers/listeners on incredibly informative, comprehensive, and compelling tour of the history, science, and possible future of artificial intelligence. The video and audio podcast are long, but well worth your time. From the moment the host says, “Hello,” Wolfram is off to the races. Our entire CMK team has been blown away by this remarkable tour-de-force and resource. I imagine that this podcast could be used with colleagues and students as well. It is truly spectacular.
