We missed you in Italy!

Buongiorno Reader!

Our dreams were realized at last week’s Language of Computation - Constructing Modern Knowledge in Reggio Emilia institute. Participants engaged in the powerful ideas of the Reggio Emilia approach, explored the beautiful ateliers, learned about documentation, researched the language of computation, made tortelli and tagliatelle from scratch, consumed all sorts of things from the meat trolley, invented robots, played with number theory, and much much more. We are most grateful to our colleagues from Reggio Emilia and to the participants who trusted us with this first-of-its-kind collaboration.

The joy of learning in such a spectacular environment was only tempered by news on the 3rd day of the institute that Carla Rinaldi, our friend and the leading light of the Reggio Emilia approach passed away. This is an enormous loss to anyone who cares about making the world a better place for children. The day after the institute, three of us were able to pay our respects at the state funeral for the brilliant educator.

Join us in Australia this August!

The learning adventures do not end in Reggio Emilia! For the first time ever, the Constructing Modern Knowledge institute educators have come to love in Manchester, New Hampshire, will be held at Westbourne Grammar School in Melbourne, Australia. Melbourne is a spectacular cosmopolitan city with a fantastic culinary scene, world-class museums, expansive parklands, rabid sports fans, exciting nightlife, reliable public transportation, seasides, and wondrous nature all within a few minutes of the CBD. Westbourne Grammar School is a dynamic school on the go serving children from six weeks to eighteen years-old. Their generosity and hospitality is making it possible for us to share CMK with Australia and Australia with educators from the USA and across the globe. Space is limited.

Rave reviews

The Learner's Apprentice: AI and the Amplification of Human Creativity by Ken Kahn continues to offer creative, constructive ways to approach AI in the classroom.

Howard Rheingold, one of the earliest proponents of the Internet and virtual worlds just posted a great review of Ken's book,

"Like social media, the question is one of literacy: how to teach young people to use these tools responsibly, and in ways that enhance rather than shortcut their learning. I can't think of a better place to start than this book."

Remembering Carla Rinaldi

Since 1970, Carla Rinaldi has been at the center of the development and dissemination of what has become globally recognized as the Reggio Emilia approach. Gary first met Carla in 2009 and brought her to Constructing Modern Knowledge in 2016 and 2018.

We created a memorial video for our recent event in Reggio Emilia to share with the participants. This video has been added to a memorial webpage along with a video of her speaking at Constructing Modern Knowledge, our podcast conversation with Carla, and other salient videos demonstrating her genius. Please take some time to read, watch, listen, think, and reflect on the immense wisdom she has shared with the world.

Rest in power, Carla.
