New book - The Learner's Apprentice: AI and the Amplification of Human Creativity

Hello Reader,

We are pleased to announce the immediate release of a new book from Constructing Modern Knowledge Press.

In The Learner’s Apprentice: AI and the Amplification of Human Creativity, Ken Kahn introduces a fresh perspective of using generative Artificial Intelligence, known as chatbots, to co-create educationally rich experiences and interactive software. Kahn shows how teachers can guide students—from elementary school to college—through the process of creating powerful software applications (apps), illustrated stories, conversations with notable figures, interactive games and adventures, and more.

In The Learner’s Apprentice, you’ll learn how to use AI to:

  • Make interactive software, simulations, and games – without learning to code
  • Create history, science, and literature adventures
  • Enhance creativity and storytelling across the curriculum

The hundreds of example projects in this book will help educators make the case for creative uses of AI in education

This is not a book of administrative shortcuts or fantasies about replacing teachers with machines. Rather, The Learner’s Apprentice models generative AI as an apprentice, colleague, co-thinker, proofreader, pair coder, brainstorming buddy, and illustrator—an intellectual ally that amplifies human potential.

Support from educators

“I love this book so much! I’m already using some of the strategies and ideas from the book in my own creative work with AI and with my students. I can’t wait to share this book with my colleagues and peers.”
— Jaymes Dec, Director of Innovation, Franklin School

“Ken Kahn’s The Learner’s Apprentice is a must-read for educators ready to embrace AI as a force for creativity and innovation. Packed with clear explanations, practical tools and inspiring examples, this book shows how AI can empower students to think critically, solve real-world problems, and express themselves like never before. It’s not just a guide, it’s a call to action for transforming classrooms into hubs of meaningful learning powered by technology!”
— Michael Furdyk, Co-founder & Director of Innovation, TakingITGlobal

"In The Learner’s Apprentice, Ken Kahn shows us how to make AI a dynamic partner for active learning. By teaming up with chatbots, we can open new opportunities for exploring, creating, playing, and reflecting. Kahn is a trustworthy guide for navigating this territory, offering practical insights and provocations for thinking, doing, and thinking about doing."
—Suzie Boss, author and project-based learning advocate

In the spirit of Invent to Learn

Just like our book, Invent to Learn: Making, Tinkering, and Engineering the Classroom, The Learner's Apprentice shares a vision of education based on constructionist pedagogy, where the learner is empowered to make sense of their world by making and doing. We do students a disservice by banning new tools, rather, we can explore them together and create experiences and artifacts that support curricular goals in any subject. The examples in The Learner's Apprentice will help any teacher answer the question of how AI can support learning—creatively, safely, ethically, and constructively.

About the author

Ken Kahn, Ph.D. brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this revolutionary work. After getting his doctorate at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Ken has been an advocate for creative computing as a computer scientist, researcher at Xerox PARC, software developer, and professor of learning and computing. The book’s examples document a thoughtful exploration of the untapped potential of AI chatbots and are shared with lively anecdotes and practical lessons for readers to try themselves.

Now available

The Learner's Apprentice is now available in paperback, hardcover, and e-book at all online retailers including Amazon and Barnes & Noble. If you would like a classroom set or multiple copies, please let us know—we can provide a volume discount. Just reply to this email.

In the coming days, we will be sharing more about this revolutionary book, including video chats with the author.
